Five Most Common Holidays Crimes

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s also a time when crime tends to rise. Unfortunately, criminals often take advantage of the seasonal chaos and people’s giving nature this time of year. Here are five of the most common crimes during the holiday season.

Shoplifting.

Shoplifting is one of the most common crimes committed during the holidays. The stores are chaotic and people are struggling to buy gifts. Because shopping will be at an all-time high during the holidays, shoplifters have more opportunities and will take advantage of the large crowds and distracted workers.

Identity theft.

Identity theft is a risk for virtually everyone during the holidays. Thieves are standing by just waiting to steal your personal information, credit card number, and more. As common as identity theft is during the holidays, there are many ways to protect yourself and your finances from being compromised. Take time to review your monthly statements, consistently balance your checkbook, review your credit reports, and secure your personal information.

DUI.

The holidays are a time for fun and celebration, but they are unfortunately one of the most dangerous times to be on the road. As holiday parties get into full swing, people face more temptation to drink while in social settings. Drunk driving is extremely common this time of year and studies show that fatalities related to alcohol-impaired driving have risen. Because of this, the courts are cracking down on impaired driving infractions.

Domestic Violence.

Unfortunately, the holidays come with higher stress levels. Oftentimes, people will start drinking more, and drug use tends to rise. Family problems that are already present tend to be increased by the holiday hustle and bustle causing people to act out in violent and destructive ways.

Burglary.

Burglary and theft are a concern at any time of the year, but it’s especially bad during the holidays. Burglars tend to break into homes that are easy to access and they usually steal items that they can quickly and inconspicuously carry, such as laptops, electronics, jewelry, cash, and even Christmas gifts. The risk of being burglarized is always there, but homeowners need to take effective measures to protect their homes and belongings during the holiday season.
